The Politics of Distraction
· What does this word say?
Layer 1
Pull in Different Directions
dis + trahere: to pull apart what was integrated — scattering a concentrated force, separating someone from the group, breaking a defensible whole into isolated parts.
An army marching together — false intelligence splits one unit off; once separated, it is easier to attack.
Layer 2
Pull Apart, Isolate
Distraction does not merely redirect your gaze — it separates you from the whole you belonged to. Lose terrain, supplies, companions — become an isolated unit, easier to capture.
Captured by social media, one feels connected yet grows isolated; captured by grade anxiety, a student disconnects from texts, body, and life — left with only "how do I get an A."
Layer 3 — Key Turn
「draw」也有「畫出、標記」的意思 · to draw also means to mark
to draw = not only to pull, but to sketch, trace, mark. Once pulled out of the whole, something becomes visible, locatable, traceable — exposed.
Sun Tzu's feints, split forces, and false intelligence — military distraction: pull the enemy from the whole, expose them, make them attackable.
"A distraction creates a target."
Social Media
Every Reaction Draws Your Profile
Click, dwell, comment — the platform is learning
No reactions yet — click, dwell, or comment to begin
Education
How Grade Anxiety Turns You into a Label
Attention redirected — then you are classified
A student might have been exploring questions, texts, and experience. But the institution pulls attention toward grades, rubrics, rankings, GPA. This distraction also marks them —

專注 Concentration
Can I steady myself first — not be pulled by the first bait? One second before reacting — that second is where sovereignty lives.
A
意識 Awareness
What is this stimulus pulling me away from? Where is it pulling me toward? If I react, what do I expose — what will the platform learn about me?
R
Responsiveness
Do I need to respond? Can I choose not immediately to click, comment, declare, or chase? Not reacting is an active choice — not indifference.
E
參與 Engagement
How do I act in the world without being easily marked, classified, captured? What I engage with — is it my choice, or the algorithm's?

Distraction as Subject-Making Technology
Distraction as Subject-Making Technology ·

Distraction is a subject-making technology. It pulls a person out of a relational field, marks, classifies, and locates them — making them manageable, attackable, targetable, traceable. The question is never only "why do I get distracted?" but: who benefits from my distraction? After distraction, what kind of person do I become?
G

What pulls my attention away — and what do I expose, to whom?
B

S

One concrete action that lets me pause before being pulled away.
D
Reassemble
What kind of actor do I choose to become — rather than a marked target?
Distraction literally means pulling something in different directions, apart, scattered. But draw also means to mark — so distraction is not only shifting attention, but pulling you out of the whole, making you visible, traceable, and finally a capturable target.
